Guide · categories

Categories: the fix that usually is the whole ballgame.

Your Google Business Profile's categories decide which searches you're even entered in. Most owners set one when they signed up and never looked again.

Why one category is like being filed under “Book”

When someone searches “mediterranean restaurant,” Google doesn’t read your menu. It looks at the categories on your profile and asks whether any of them fit. A restaurant filed only under the generic category Restaurant is, to that search, not a restaurant at all — it’s a book filed under Book. You might win the one search that matches exactly and lose every neighboring one that people actually type.

That is precisely what the first Cairn scan found: a 4.9-star Moroccan restaurant ranking #1 for “moroccan restaurant” across most of Denver, and invisible to “mediterranean restaurant,” “middle eastern food” and “halal” — where the volume lives — because the profile listed exactly one category, the generic one.

Primary vs. additional

Every profile has one primary category — the strongest signal, the one Google leans on most — and up to nine additional categories. The primary should be the most specific category that describes what you mainly are (Moroccan restaurant, not Restaurant; House cleaning service, not Cleaning service). The additional ones should be every other category that’s honestly true of the business. Honestly is the operative word: Google removes categories that don’t match, and a profile stuffed with wishful ones reads as spam.

How to choose

  1. Write down the five things customers search when they want what you sell. (Cairn suggests these, with real search volume, when you scan.)
  2. For each, find the Google category that names it. Google’s category list is fixed — you pick from it, you don’t invent.
  3. The most specific one that describes your core business becomes primary. The rest become additional, if they’re true.
  4. Look at the businesses winning the areas you want. Their categories are public — Cairn shows them when you click an area. If a true category appears on all of theirs and none of yours, that’s the gap.

How to change them

Google Business Profile app (or business.google.com) → Edit profileBusiness category. Set the primary, add the additional ones, save. Ten minutes. Changes usually show in search within days; a re-scan a week or two later shows what moved.

Cairn’s fix check reads your profile’s actual categories and flags two things: a single category, and a keyword that none of your categories mention. Both are “free · 10 minutes · usually the big one.” See yours →
